Serie A giants end interest in Manchester United defender
AS Roma have reportedly decided against making a permanent move for Chris Smalling after being put off by the demands of Manchester United.
The 30-year-old joined the Serie A side on loan at the start of the season and he has since made 28 appearances for the club in all competitions.
Smalling's performances have urged Roma to seek a permanent deal at the end of the campaign but it appears that they can't afford the asking price set by United.
The Red Devils were initially said to demand around £12m for Smalling but they have increased the price tag to £19m after watching the defender's progress.
According to Tuttosport, Roma are already in a tight financial situation amid the coronavirus pandemic and they have opted to end their pursuit of the England international.
Instead, they are eyeing a deal for Dejan Lovren from Liverpool.
The club have a good working relationship with the Reds after the recent sales of Alisson and Mohamed Salah and they are hoping to take advantage of the same to sign the defender on a cut-price deal.
