Manchester United and Liverpool could go head-to-head for the signature of Dayot Upamecano at the end of the current season.

The Frenchman was initially linked with a move away from RB Leipzig as his contract was expiring in 12 months' time.

However, he eventually made the decision to sign a fresh three-year deal with a £38m release clause, which becomes active next summer.

According to Bild, both United and Liverpool are aware of the buy-out clause and they could attempt to sign him at the end of the campaign.

The Red Devils had enquired over Upamecano's availability earlier last month, but Leipzig made it clear that he was not for sale.

Upamecano will face Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side in the Champions League group stage after Leipzig were drawn alongside them.

The matches should provide the Red Devils  a fair example of Upamecano's strengths and weakness ahead of a fresh transfer bid next summer.

Upamecano is currently on Nations League duty with France.
