Silva set for new Chelsea contract

Chelsea are prepared to extend the contract of Thiago Silva for another season after an impressive debut campaign.

The 36-year-old joined the Blues on a free transfer last summer, and he has seamlessly adapted to the Premier League.

His leadership qualities have impressed the hierarchy, and reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano claims he is set to stay for another year.

Silva has been a favourite under Tuchel since his Paris Saint-Germain days, and the Blues are prepared to trigger a 12-month option on his contract.

Irrespective of this, the club will step up their plans to sign a world-class defender. Silva could have a reduced role next season.

The Blues are looking into a possible deal for Real Madrid's Raphael Varane, who is considering a fresh challenge elsewhere.

Varane has no desire to extend his Madrid deal which expires in 14 months, and he is said to prefer a move to the Premier League.

Manchester United have also been linked with the Frenchman, but their interest may have cooled after committing Eric Bailly to a new contract.
