Renato Sanches set for Arsenal transfer

Arsenal have edged a step closer to completing a move for Lille midfielder Renato Sanches. The 23-year-old is seen as a long-term replacement for Granit Xhaka.

With Granit Xhaka looking increasingly likely to head to AS Roma in a transfer deal worth up to 28 million euros, Arsenal are seeking a replacement and have identified Lille and Portugal midfielder Renato Sanches as an option.

The Gunners have an outstanding working relationship with Renato Sanches' current club Lille, having signed Pepe from the Ligue 1 champions in a club record deal. Prior to that, Arsenal had also signed Gervinho.

It is understood that as part of a move for the Portuguese, Arsenal could pay the remainder of the Pepe deal up front - currently believed to be in the region of 25 million euros - and pay an additional 23 million euros to secure the former Swansea City, Bayern Munich and Benfica midfielder.

During Euro 2020, the youngster had an impressive tournament, despite his country falling short in a 1-0 loss to well fancied favourites Belgium in the last 16.

The 5 foot 9 midfielder is considered a versatile player, much like Granit Xhaka, with an outstanding ability as a playmaking midfielder but also a capable defensive midfielder.

Arsenal will be competing with Spanish side Atletico Madrid in a potential move for the 23-year-old.
