Chelsea tried to offload Ross Barkley on deadline day
Chelsea tried to offload midfielder Ross Barkley on deadline day, but his wages proved a stumbling block.
The 27-year-old spent last season on loan with Aston Villa, and it was reported that he could leave the Blues permanently this summer.
However, there were no offers on the table for the England international. The Blues could not even move him out on a temporary deal.
According to The Telegraph, West Bromwich Albion were interested in a possible loan agreement for the versatile midfielder.
A deal never materialised in the end as they were reluctant to pay anywhere near the player's £110,000-a-week salary at the Blues.
The 27-year-old has had a tough career with the west London giants, bagging just 11 goals and 11 assists from 86 appearances.
He still has 22 months remaining on his contract. He is completely out of picture at the moment, but has no plans of terminating his deal.
Barkley has been included in the Blues' Premier League squad, but he is unlikely to play unless there is a major injury crisis.
