Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has urged his former club to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as their permanent manager.

The Argentine is presently with Paris Saint-Germain, but is widely expected to be sacked following their early Champions League exit.

Hence, they may not be any compensation involved. In an interview with The Telegraph, Rooney has backed Pochettino for the United vacancy.

The Red Devils are currently in the process of appointing a new head coach, and they have already talks with some of the possible candidates.

Among them, Ajax's Erik ten Hag and Pochettino appear the front-runners, but the hierarchy are leaning towards signing the former this summer.

Ten Hag has earned the reputation of grooming young players into potential world-beaters at Ajax. United may prefer to go with his credentials.

There has been no formal contact with Ajax at the moment, and the Red Devils may have to wait until the end of the season to engage negotiations.
