Man City star confirms Man Utd wanted to sign him
Manchester City's new summer signing Kalvin Phillips has confirmed that Manchester United were interested in signing him.
The England international left his boyhood club Leeds United for the Cityzens earlier this month, but it appears United were also keen.
In a recent interview, Phillips revealed that the Red Devils made a move for him, but he was unlikely to join them due to Leeds' fierce rivalry.
He said: "I was honoured by United wanting me, such a big team – one of the biggest teams in the world. But no, I had to stay loyal to Leeds and choose to go to the other side of Manchester."
Phillips would have been an ideal fit for United in the defensive midfield role. The club are still on the search for a quality number six.
They recently agreed a deal with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong, but the Netherlands international has yet to agree personal terms.
He is reluctant to leave Barcelona at the moment due to his deferred ways while a move to Old Trafford does not seem to appeal him.
The 25-year-old wants to play Champions League football and win regular silverware. He is said to prefer a move to Chelsea instead.
