Rangers reach UEFA Cup Final

Walter Smith's Rangers shocked Europe as they made the final of the UEFA Cup after defeating Fiorentina 4-2 on penalties, as the winning penalty was slot away by Nacho Novo to secure their final place.

Until the shootout, the match was a virtual replica of the dull scoreless draw in the first leg.

Fiorentina controlled throughout, while Rangers sat back, apparently content to let the match be decided on penalties.

Fiorentina were left to rue missed chances at home and in Glasgow.

The Italians had an extra man for the final 11 minutes of extra-time after Rangers substitute Daniel Cousin was sent off for a second bookable offence.

"We must accept it, it's been a good night but it could have ended better,'' said Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli.

"Particular thanks to the lads who tried right up to the last minute to win. A team that didn't want to play has been rewarded.''

Zenit will play the May 14 final in Manchester without the inspiration behind their remarkable win over Bayern.
