Carlos Alcaraz wanted by Saints

Argentina have completed a transfer move to sign Argentinian midfielder Carlos Alcaraz from Racing Club in a deal worth $17.4 million. Alcaraz has signed a three-and-a-half year contract at St Mary's, and is expected to provide cover for the Saints' first-team for the remainder of the Premier League season.

Since making his first team debut for Racing in 2020, Alcaraz has been a regular starter, with 38 games in Primera Division and a return of four goals. Alcaraz's preferred position is as a creative midfielder, but is also comfortable playing on the right wing or in a central attacking midfield role. Standing at 1.83 metres, Alcarez is tall and robust, has a good range of passing and is a tough tackling defensive midfielder if required.

It is understood that Racing have agreed a 15 percent sell on clause as part of the deal with the Saints. Alcaraz famously scored the winning goal in the 2022 Argentine Cup Final against Boca Juniors.

Southampton have beaten several clubs to signing Alcaraz, including French clubs Rennes and Monaco, as well as Italian duo Salernitana and Genoa.
