Arsenal open contract talks with Swiss midfielder?
Arsenal have opened talks with midfielder Granit Xhaka over a new and improved contract, according to 90min.
Xhaka has been superb for the Gunners from the creative midfield role this term, bagging four goals and five assists from 31 games.
He effectively has another two years remaining on his contract, but talks are now underway over a renewal with an assured pay rise.
The 31-year-old has been ever-present for the Gunners in the Premier League this term, but his role could be reduced next season.
The north London giants are planning to pursue a marquee midfielder. This could lessen the playing time of the Switzerland captain.
Nevertheless, the Gunners are keen to reward Xhaka for his progress this campaign and the midfielder could extend his stay soon.
Arsenal are top of the Premier League with 54 points, two ahead of Manchester City. They have a game in hand over them.
The Gunners will be aiming to temporarily extend the gap when they face Leicester City at the King Power Stadium tomorrow.
