Liverpool eye summer move for a new right-back

Jurgen Klopp news

The recent form of Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to be a concern for Liverpool, as the Anfield outfit are apparently weighing up a move for several targets during the upcoming summer transfer window. Jurgen Klopp has been in discussions with his board regarding transfer dealings, and Adrien Truffert of Rennes has emerged as a primary target, whilst the right side of defence could soon be occupied by by RB Leipzig's Benjamin Henrichs.

Henrichs joined Leipzig from Monaco in 2021 and has since been an almost ever present in the Bundesliga club's starting XI. The 26-year-old has been a target for Klopp for some time, after the German coach saw Henrichs emerge from Bayer Leverkusen's impressive youth side in 2015. Henrichs has seven caps for the German national team, and is expected to play for his country on a regular basis in the future. The versatile 26-year-old, who is also comfortable playing in right or central midfield, is eager to move to the Premier League to boost his opportunities of national team recognition.

Adrien Truffert, on the other hand, primarily operates as a left-back and would therefore provide cover for Andy Robertson in that position at Anfield. However, the 21-year-old French international, who made his debut last year for the national side, can also play as a right back. The starlet, who was born in Belgium, has been one of Rennes' best players so far this season and even Paris St Germain have been linked with a mega money transfer move for the player.

Liverpool club legend Jamie Carragher has also called on his former club to sign an alternative to Alexander-Arnold, who has come under pressure for his recent sloppy defensive errors. There have been reports that Alexander-Arnold could later emerge as a midfielder, but Carragher is not a fan of that idea either.

“That can’t continue, what’s happened this season with him and the number of times he has been lacking defensively. The problem they have got in that position is that they’ve never had real competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold,” Carragher quipped in an interview during last night’s Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.

“One of the reasons why is because he has been so good and you think ‘Who do you buy and how much do you spend for someone who is not really going to play every week?’

Liverpool are at the point where they have got to go and buy a right-back. It’s Jurgen Klopp decision in terms of how good that right-back is and how much he costs, but that lad needs serious competition.”

Alexander-Arnold’s form has been criticised in recent months, particularly due to Liverpool’s descent down the Premier League table. Carragher added: “Trent needs to have a long think at the end of the season about where he is as a right-back, and I’ve always defended him because he’s played in one of the best teams in the world.”

The likelihood that Alexander-Arnold makes a move away from Liverpool remains currently unlikely, but Betting Tips 4 You will be tracking all of the activity and odds over the summer months. The transfer market will reopen in July, and Liverpool are likely to have significant funds to spend. Rumours suggest that Klopp’s club could be given as much as £100 million for new faces, and defenders will be a top priority.
