Ian Maatsen to leave Chelsea for Borussia Dortmund
Chelsea have agreed to let left-back Ian Maatsen leave the club on a temporary basis, as the 21-year-old searches for regular first-team action. The versatile youngster, who arrived at Chelsea in 2018 from PSV Eindhoven, wants a move elsewhere and Borussia Dortmund will pay an upfront fee of around 1.5 million euros for the six month loan spell.
With Dortmund slipping down the league table due to the impressive form of Bayer Leverkusen and perennial performers Bayern Munich, BVB want to move swiftly to bring in fresh faces. The signing of Maatsen will be a huge boost to Dortmund. It is understood there is no agreement for a permanent deal included in the package.
Maatsen had spells on loan at Burnley last season, but prior to that two loan periods with Charlton Athletic and Coventry City were deemed a success. So far, he has been unable to force his way into Chelsea's starting XI on a regular basis.
It is hoped that a spell in the Bundesliga will give Maatsen the opportunity to shine, and possibly return to England to become a regular at Stamford Bridge.
