Manchester United have received a major setback in signing Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo during the summer transfer window.

The Frenchman was the Red Devils' top centre-back target last year, but they could not afford him due to Financial Fair Play issues.

The club were hoping to sign him after parting ways with Harry Maguire, but the former captain made the decision to stay instead.

United have been fancied to return for his services, but a deal looks difficult to pull off due to the demands of the French outfit.

The Red Devils have been told to pay between £47-51 million for the centre-back. They are reluctant to go over £34m for him.

Nice are currently owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is also the co-owner of United, but the Red Devils won't get any advantage.

Hence, United may have to look elsewhere to reinforce their central defensive department ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

They have been linked with Juventus' Gleison Bremer in recent weeks.
