Varane close to Como move

Serie A newcomers Como are pushing to sign former Manchester United defender Raphael Varane on a free transfer this summer.

The Frenchman parted ways with United at the end of last season. The club had the option to extend his £350,000 per week contract for another campaign, but decided against doing so.

It was initially predicted that Varane would be open to a big-money move to Saudi Arabia, but the World Cup winner has made the decision to prolong his career in European football next term.

Lens have been exploring a free transfer in recent weeks, but Fabrizio Romano claims that Serie A newcomers Como are in pole position to land him with the help of manager Cesc Fabregas.

Varane has already spoken directly with the former Arsenal star. It remains to be seen whether he is prepared to accept a staggering pay-cut to make the switch to Como, who have high ambitions of staying in the top tier.
