Arsenal preparing formal talks for new midfielder

Arsenal are preparing to hold formal talks over a new midfielder following the signing of Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

The Gunners have not made any outfield signings in the current transfer window, but they are expected to announce one soon.

Calafiori has already undergone his medical in London today and he is expected to travel to the US for the remaining formalities.

Once his transfer is announced, the club will then focus on the purchase of a new midfielder. Real Sociedad's Mikel Merino is the top target.

The former Newcastle United man has entered the final year of his contract at the La Liga outfit and he is open to a fresh challenge.

He has been linked with the likes of Barcelona and Atletico, but Arsenal are optimistic of prising him away for around £21 million.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has a close association with his former club and he is playing a key role in the move for the Spaniard.
