Conor Gallagher aims dig at Chelsea after Atletico move
England midfielder Conor Gallagher has said that he left Chelsea for Atletico Madrid to play Champions League football and challenge for trophies.
The 24-year-old entered the last year of his Blues contract earlier this summer. He made the decision to move on after failing to negotiate fresh terms.
Speaking ahead of the Leipzig game, Gallagher said that he has now taken an exciting step of playing Champions League football and challenging for trophies with Atletico.
He said: "Chelsea are a huge football club, one of the biggest in the world, along with Atletico. But I have taken that exciting step of playing Champions League football and challenging for trophies.
Atletico have not won regular trophies under Diego Simeone, but they have still impressed with two La Liga titles and a Europa League crown.
Simeone had the financial backing from the hierarchy in the summer and the onus is now on delivering the goods with silverware.
Gallagher, who scored his maiden Atletico goal against Valencia, will be aiming to play a huge role in the club's push for trophies.
