Italy win without big stars

Roberto Donadoni has been rewarded for dropping his big guns. Antonio Di Natale, Juve forward Vincenzo Iaquinta and Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini came in for De Rossi, Inzaghi and Del Piero. Christian Panucci played in place of inconsistent right back Massimo Oddo and stuck by inexperienced Palermo centre back Andrea Barzagli.

At the weekend many of Italy's stars failed to shine as France picked up a goalless draw with the World Champions.

The decision to rotate was rewarded as Italy defeated Ukraine 2-1 with two goals from di Natale and an assist from Ambrosini.

The tough looking away game proved no problem for the Azzurri and Donadoni commented after the game, "Ale (Del Piero) had tired a lot against France and I needed fresh legs. Unfortunately on such occasions and with this type of game it is necessary to take painful decisions."
