Manchester United could look into a deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand after failing to convince Brighton & Hove Albion to sell Carlos Baleba.

The Red Devils are determined to land a holding midfielder before the transfer deadline. Baleba was the priority target, but Brighton have made it clear that he won't be leaving for another year.

United now need to look at alternative options and BBC Sport claim that the club could make a late move for Hjulmand, who has his sights on leaving Sporting CP before the transfer window closes.

Hjulmand has a release clause worth £68 million in his contract, but could be sold for around £58m, provided the add-ons are easily achievable.

United boss Ruben Amorim had a good relationship with the player during their time at Sporting CP and he has given the green light for a deal.

Sporting CP are a difficult club to negotiate with, and United need to move fast as the Portuguese champions may want a replacement first.
