Man Utd defender in line for Stoke City loan
Manchester United defender Phil Jones could be set to make a shock move to Stoke City on loan before the transfer window closes next week, according to reports.
The Sun is reporting that Phil Jones could be in line for a season long loan to Stoke City, with the England defender not figuring heavily in manager José Mourinho’s plans at Old Trafford this season.
Jones is yet to make a competitive appearance for the Red Devils this season, and is thought to be keen on a temporary move away in order to gain some first team playing time.
Stoke boss Mark Hughes is an admirer of the versatile 24-year-old, and is considering taking Jones on loan for the season.
Joines signed for United from Blackburn Rovers as a teenager in 2011. At the time, he was thought of as a possible future England captain, and was even likened to United great Duncan Edwards by then manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
But Jones has failed to live up to his £16.5 million price tag in his five years in Manchester. The England international has been switched between centre-back, right-back and midfield and has been unable to hold down a regular starting berth in any of these positions. A series of injuries has also contributed to Jones’s lack of progression.
A move to Stoke would represent a chance for Jones to get his career back on track.
