Campbell in demand

Sol Campell went from playing in League Two to scoring in the Champion’s League, during last season. After his second spell with Arsenal came to an end last season, without him impacting on their odds to win premier leaguesilverware, Campbell became a free agent.

The 35 year old has found himself with more offers than he thought he would. Sunderland, Newcastle and Celtic have all approached the defender. Somewhat surprisingly Arsene Wenger has also made Campbell an offer of a one year deal to re-sign with Arsenal. At this stage in his career Campbell might want to go to a club where he guaranteed more playing time then he will at Arsenal this season.

Football bettingexperts reported that a move to Celtic looked the most likely option earlier in the summer. Then Steve Bruce offered Campbell a deal to go to Sunderland. That deal looks less likely now as Bruce has just signed Titus Bramble. Newcastle’s boss Chris Hughton, worked with Campbell at Spurs. Hughton is keen to add the experienced centre back to his newly promoted squad. His performances for Arsenal towards the end of last season proved he can still perform at this level.

There was even talk of him making the England World Cup squad. He couldn’t have done worse than the players picked by Capello in defence. Campbell will probably fail to add to his 73 international caps.

At his age he will be focusing on playing regularly in the top-flight. Campbell missed much of last season through injury and contract disputes with Notts County, in one of the stranger storylines from last season. He bounced back from those issues and showed he still has plenty to offer. Which club he will be offering it to remains to be seen.
