  • Sir Alex Ferguson was left fuming at full time after his side dropped a crucial three points in their race to catch Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

Referee John Flynn insisted that Rio Ferdinand brought down Newcastle winger Hatem Ben Arfa during the game. Subsequently, a penalty decision was given, and Demba Ba scored.

Ferguson said: "The referee thought it was a corner and he was nearer to the incident. It was an absolute travesty.

"The problem is that assistants are not full-time even if the referees are.

"I don't think anyone in the ground thought it was a penalty apart from the assistant referee."
