Sporting Gijon gave Real Madrid an early scare as Miguel de Las Cuevas scored from the penalty spot to give them the lead. But an important equaliser from Gonzalo Higuain kept the hosts in with a chance. Meanwhile, Barcelona had a tough battle at Levante, knowing they required all 3 points to stay in the title race. Goal sfrom Lionel Messi in the 64th and 72nd minute would be enough to secure all 3 points, and to ensure a grandstand finish for the finale of this thrilling La Liga campaign.
