La Liga leaders Real Madrid survived an early scare from minnows Sporting Gijon to win 3-1 last night, whilst second placed Barcelona won 2-1 against Levante later on to keep up the pressure.
Real Madrid's victory had left them seven points ahead of their fierce rivals Barcelona at the top of the table, but an important victory against Levante keeps the Cules in touch with a chance of retaining their title.
Sporting Gijon gave Real Madrid an early scare as Miguel de Las Cuevas scored from the penalty spot to give them the lead. But an important equaliser from Gonzalo Higuain kept the hosts in with a chance. With just 15 minutes to go, that man Cristiano Ronaldo would put Madrid back in front and then later on Karim Benzema secured all 3 points.
Meanwhile, Barcelona had a tough battle at Levante, knowing they required all 3 points to stay in the title race. Goal sfrom Lionel Messi in the 64th and 72nd minute would be enough to secure all 3 points, and to ensure a grandstand finish for the finale of this thrilling La Liga campaign.
