Chelsea plot move for Mario Gomez

14 June 2013 - 14:45

Mario Gomez is a major target for Chelsea this summer as they to bolster their strike-force.

  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • Having already completed an £18 million deal to land Bayer Leverkusen star Andre Schurrle, the returning blues boss wants to strengthen his attack by signing experienced forward Mario Gomez, who could be set for an Allianz Arena exit.

Mario Gomez had an excellent season in 2011-2012 with the UEFA Champions League winners Bayern Munich scoring 41 goals in all competitions, but went off the hook last second with the signing of Mario Mandžukić from Wolfsburg last summer.

Gomez has been a prolific scorer for Bayern over the years in the Bundesliga since his record £30 million move from Stuttgart four years ago and regarded as one of German football’s most effective target men.

But he can no longer count on an automatic starting place ahead of Mandžukić and fears slipping down the pecking order, if Bayern were to succeed in persuading Borussia Dortmund to accept a Robert Lewandowski bid this summer.

His agent Uli Ferber indicated that he was ‘not happy’ at being on the fringes, and it is understood he would welcome a fresh start at Stamford Bridge.
