Chelsea have confirmed their decision to farm out their keeper Thibaut Courtois for a third consecutive season to Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

  • The keeper joined the Blues from Belgian club Genk in 2011 but he spent all his time with Atletico ever since. He has enjoyed huge success with the club in the two years in the form of Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in 2012. Last season he helped his side win the Copa del Ray.

His performance with the club saw him receive the Zamora Trophy, which is given to the goalkeeper with lowest goal-to-game ratio in Spain’s top flight.

Courtois, who had earlier expressed his confidence in being loaned out to Atletico again this season is delighted with this confirmation coming from Chelsea. In his interview with the Atletico website, he said:

"I'm very happy because it's what I was wanting"

"I've always said that next season I wanted to continue at Atletico and compete in a competition as important as the Champions League, having achieved qualification in such a brilliant way”

"I've only thought about continuing to enjoy the incredible fans that we have and I hope that we can continue giving them plenty of joy."

Atletico Sporting Director Jose Luis Perez Caminero had earlier prioritized securing the services of the Belgian keeper for yet another season.

"We are very pleased to have him for another year. He has played almost every game and given us great confidence in his abilities.”

"He had said he wanted to stay here so this gives everybody joy."
