Luis Suarez expresses his views on the Arsenal transfer saga

07 August 2013 - 14:08

Liverpool's Luis Suarez expressed his views on the transfer saga in his first big interview of the summer.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • Despite reports from many sources suggesting that Arsenal had triggered Suarez's release clause with their second bid, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers insisted that the Merseyside club did not require to sell their talented striker.

Suarez in an interview with The Telegraph said that a written agreement was made by him and the club last summer, saying, “I am being accused of showing a lack of loyalty but last year I had the opportunity to move to a big European club and I stayed on the understanding that if we did not qualify for the Champions League the following season then I would be allowed to go.”

Brendan Rodgers has claimed that Uruguayan star is not for sale this summer in spite of speculation of a move away from Liverpool.

Luis Suarez has however claimed that the Liverpool manager had promised him with the opportunity to leave the Reds should the club fail to qualify for the Champions League last season.

He said: “I spoke with Brendan Rodgers several times and he told me: ‘stay another season, and you have my word, if we don’t make it then I will personally make sure that you can leave'.”
