Keown backs Arsenals Suarez chase

Keown backs Arsenal's Suarez chase

14 August 2013 - 17:26

Forer Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes that Arsenal's recent chase for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez's signature is set to instil new hope among the fans.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • The Arsenal fans have been disillusioned with their club after the Gunners once again failed to win any silverware in the 2012-13 season.

Arsene Wenger has revealed that he intends to spend this summer so as to improve the squad before the new season begins but there has been no new additions so far.

Wenger has had his two bids rejected by Liverpool as the Merseysiders remain adamant to hold on to their star striker for the next season. But Keown believes, that even if Arsenal fail to land Suarez the significant change in Wenger's transfer policy is good news for the fans.

"It was a demonstration to Arsenal fans," said Keown.

"The club were saying 'We have £40m there. We have tried to buy someone else's best player for a change'. It has shown how serious Arsenal are about spending money.

"In the past, Arsene has nurtured them, then lost them just when they are at their best, as was the case with Samir Nasri, Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie.

"Now he needs to go out and buy an obvious talent, someone who is going to hit the ground running, and they don't come cheap.

"Fair play to Liverpool for hanging on to Suarez but Arsenal still need to buy two or three players. If they do, I think there is a real chance."
