Newcastle's move for Gomis fell through due to lofty wage demands

Lyon forward Bafetimbi Gomis has confirmed that his deal to move to Newcastle fell through as the Toon Army were unable to match his salary request. Gomis' deal at the Ligue 1 side will expire next summer.

  • Newcastle struggled to find a striker this summer despite Gomis having been linked with a move to St. James' Park.

Gomis confirmed that a deal fell through due to salary demands: "I had a talk with Newcastle's coach and we found an agreement.

"Then, there were talks with Lyon, there was a first offer - which was refused and then a second one, which was accepted.

"Newcastle then came back to me and asked me to make an effort on wages - but I never asked anything as it was my club which wanted to transfer me, so the effort had to be made by Newcastle or Lyon."
