Garay tells reporters Moyes pulled plug on Man Utd transfer

Garay tells reporters Moyes pulled plug on Man Utd transfer

14 October 2013 - 08:28

Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay would have been a Manchester United player had Sir Alex Ferguson not retired from football last season. The Argentine defender had reportedly agreed a transfer with Sir Alex but new manager David Moyes pulled the plug on a deal.

  • Arsenal to swap Gabriel Jesus for Inter Milan star?
  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • The defender had been linked with a move to Old Trafford for over three years and Sir Alex had almost finally wrapped up a deal for the Argentine only for Sir Alex to announce a shock retirement from football.

David Moyes then told Benfica that Man Utd would no longer be pushing for a transfer for Garay and would pursue other transfer targets.

Garay confirmed this in an interview yesterday evening, as it appears a transfer to United was closer than many thought: "I believed I was going to Manchester United in the summer. The deal was nearly closed but finally Benfica did not accept the offer. “I believe the exit of Ferguson has influenced the deal. Moyes did not believe in me as much but that is not a problem."
