The Premier League champions failed in an attempt to sign the Portuguese defender on transfer deadline day, as Los Blancos manager Carlo Ancelloti rebuffed the season-long loan suggesting that the club could not find adequate cover.<br />

Red Devils manager David Moyes is expected to return with a new bid to acquire the 25-year-old's signature, who was said to be heartbroken when his switch to the Premier League holders fell through.<br />

However, The Daily Mail claims that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who was his former coach at the Bernabeu, is lining up a short-term deal during the New Year with a view to a permanent move at the end of the current campaign.
