David Luiz gave the lead to Brazil in the 18th minute as he headed in his first international goal from a Neymar corner. Alexis Sanchez equalized for Chile with 13 minutes left in the first-half.
The second half had a steady pattern as both sides played with a low tempo, with the major talking point being a goal disallowed for Hulk by referee Howard Webb due to a hand-ball incident.
With the scores level, the second half of extra-time produced a moment of bad luck for Chile, as Mauricio Pinilla hit the crossbar with a minute to spare before the spot-kicks.
Brazil finally sealed their place in the last 8 with a 3-2 shoot-out win, as star keeper Julio Cesar kept out two spot-kicks from Mauricio Pinilla and Alexis Sanchez before Nottingham Forest's Gonzalo Jara hit the woodwork with the final kick of the game.
