Germany showed respect to Brazil

Mats Hummels:'We promised not to humiliate Brazil at half-time'

12 July 2014 - 10:25

Germany defender Mats Hummels has admitted that the team had decided to spare Brazil from further embarrassment in their World Cup semi-final match in Belo Horizonte.

  • Chelsea ready to sell four home-grown players
  • Predicted Chelsea line-up (4-2-3-1) vs Aston Villa, Palmer starts

  • The Germans shocked one and all in their semi-final encounter with the hosts, as they lead by a 5-0 scoreline at the break thanks to a brace from Toni Kroos, and a goal apiece from Thomas Muller, Sami Khedira and Miroslav Klose, who bagged his 16th World Cup goal, thereby breaking Ronaldo's record.

Andre Schurrle scored twice coming from the bench and Oscar netted the consolation goal for Brazil in the 7-1 demolition.

However, Hummels, who plys his trade with Borussia Dortmund revealed that manager Joachim Low had asked the team to go easy on the Canarinho, as they were already suffering a crushing defeat.

"We just made it clear that we had to stay focused and not try to humiliate them," He said."We said we had to stay serious and concentrate at half time. That's something you don't have to show on the pitch if you are playing."

"You have to show the opponent respect and it was very important that we did this and didn't try to show some magic or something like this. It was important we played our game for 90 minutes."

Germany will take on Argentina in the World Cup final at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana stadium tomorrow.
