AS Monaco are understood to be plotting a move for Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney.

United boss Louis van Gaal gave the captain armband to the England international as the start of the new season, following the departure of Nemanja Vidic to Inter Milan over the summer.

According to The Telegraph, the Ligue 1 giants are hopeful of landing the talented striker's signature by the next season.

Monaco have had a poor start to the league season, and are currently in eleventh place.
