Could Icardi be set for Atlético Madrid move?

12 July 2016 - 08:31

Mauro Icardi has grown frustrated at current club Inter Milan, and could soon make a move to join Atlético Madrid, according to reports in Italy.

  • Mauricio Pochettino confirms fresh injury blow for Chelsea star
  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • La Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Icadi's wife and agent, Wanda Icardi, is unhappy at the contract offer the Italian club has made to her husband, feeling that it undervalues the player.

This has sparked speculation that Icardi could be heading for the exit door at the San Siro, with Diego Simeone's Atlético Madrid the most likely destination for the 23-year-old Argentinian.

Simeone, who is a former Inter player, is known to be a big admirer of Icardi, and feels that the combative goal poacher could be the perfect foil for star striker Antoine Griezmann.

Griezmann was in outstanding form for Atléti last season, scoring an impressive 32 goals in all competitions.

But Simeone struggled to find a suitable partner for the 25-year-old Frenchman, with Luciano Vietto, Jackson Martínez -- who was sold to the Chinese Super League in January -- and Fernando Torres all having spells alongside Griezmann in the first team with mixed success.

But Icardi's style of penalty area poaching could make him the ideal candidate to play alongside Griezmann, who liked to drop a little deeper than a traditional number 9.

However, any move for Icardi would not come cheap: Inter have recently received new investment from China and will be in no financial need to sell one of their star players.
