Inter Milan have agreed personal terms with Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel, according to reports in Italy.
Gazzetta dello Sport claims that the Nerazzurri have offered the 27-year-old a deal worth €3 million per season, to which the player has agreed.
However, Zenit St Petersburg's €22 million asking price could yet prove to be a stumbling block for any potential deal.
Everton are thought to be interested in taking Witsel to Goodison Park, as they look to bolseter their squad using money invested in the club by Iranian billionaire Farhad Moshiri.
New manager Ronald Koeman has drawn up a short list of desirable acquisitions, with the Belgium international thought to be among the names listed.
In addition to the funds received from Moshiri's investment, Everton could be set for a further windfall, with 22-year-old defender John Stones strongly rumoured to be close to joining Manchester City for a fee of £50 million.
Star striker Romelu Lukaku had also previously been heavily linked with a move away from Merseyside this summer, however rumours of his exit have gone quite in recent weeks, and the former Chelsea player could yet remain with Everton next season.
Inter have recently been subject to a takeover from the China based Suning group.
Manager Roberto Mancini is expected to have additional transfer funds made available as part of the takeover.
