Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is prepared to accept that he is no longer going to be a first-choice regular at Old Trafford any more, according to reports.
The Mirror is reporting that, following his substitute’s role against in the Red Devils’ 4-1 win over Premier League champions Leicester City at Old Trafford on Saturday, Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney has accepted that his days as a guaranteed starter may be over.
Rooney sat out the majority of United’s impressive 4-1 victory over the Foxes at the weekend, only coming off the bench for the final 10 minutes with the game already won.
The 30-year-old has been the subject of widespread criticism in recent months, as he performances for the Old Trafford club have fallen short of the high standards he set for himself earlier in his career.
There has been a general clamouring from United fans for Rooney to be left out of the side, which has built over the last few weeks.
Many feel that Rooney’s presence in the side slows down United’s attacking play, and prevents world record signing Paul Pogba from thriving.
And it now appears that United boss Jose Mourinho has come around to that way of thing, having reportedly made his made up to leave Rooney out of the Leicester game following the England captain’s woeful display in his side’s 3-1 defeat to Watford the week before.
Rooney then started the EFL Cup tie away to Northampton Town, playing as United’s central striker on that occasion. But the former Everton player was unable to score against League One opposition.
