Elephants coast through

29 January 2008 - 19:26

Ivory Coast capped off their last group match with a superb display to demolish Mali 3-0.

  • Chelsea ready new contract for star midfielder
  • Chelsea make first move to sign Xabi Alonso
  • The Elephants had the game under control from start to finish and although Mali had qualification in their own hands, their defeat to Ivory Coast and Nigeria's 2-0 victory over Benin has sent them on an early flight home.

Ivory Coast got the ball rolling after 9 minutes with a fantistically well taken goal by Didier Drogba from a brilliant Yaya Toure pass.

The Elephants made it 2-0 from a corner when Marc Zoro nodded in and sealed it with a Boubacar Sanogo rebound.

The Eagles needed a different tact but with the game petering out substitute Sanogo tucked in the rebound from a long range shot to seal it for Ivory Coast and leave Mali ruing a missed opportunity with qualification in their hands at he start of the match.

Ivory Coast now go into the knock-out as one of the main favourites to win the tournament and full of confidence.
