Arsenal boss rules out Jordan Pickford signing

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has ruled out the signing of Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the summer by citing the goalkeeping options at hand.

  • The 23-year-old has received plenty of Premier League interest in recent weeks after the Black Cats were condemned to the second tier of English football.

Pickford made a total of 11 saves at the Emirates yesterday which kept the Gunners to a 2-0 scoreline in what was a must-win game for the north London club.

Following the game, Wenger was asked about his interest in Pickford, and for which, he said: "Pickford had an exceptional night. I think we had 36 shots at goal, the highest in the Premier League. The keeper saved 11 of them, so he did extremely well, but we have plenty of goalkeepers.

"We have Petr Cech, Ospina, we have Wojciech Szczesny who is only on loan at Roma and has had an exceptional season. We [also] have Damian Martinez. If there is one thing we do not need to buy, it is a goalkeeper."

Pickford has spent his entire career with the Wearside outfit, but there is a huge possibility that he will end his association this summer with Everton having already approached for his signature.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will continue their quest for a top-four finish in the final game of the season when they take on Ronald Koeman's side at home.

The FA Cup finalists currently trail Liverpool by a single point in the standings but the Reds are favourites to clinch the final Champions League spot with a win over Middlesbrough.
