Jack Wilshere omitted from England World Cup squad?

England manager Gareth Southgate has reportedly excluded Jack Wilshere from his 23-man World Cup squad amid concerns over the Arsenal midfielder's fitness levels.

  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • The 26-year-old managed to experience his most productive season to date with the Gunners after making 38 appearances across all competitions but this has not been sufficient to convince Southgate over a potential World Cup spot.

According to The Times, Southgate was not impressed by the midfielder's fitness levels during his recent international call-up for the friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy.

It is added that Wilshere had struggled to cope with some of Southgate's training regimes and his withdrawal with an ankle problem appears to have hampered his chances even more.

Alongside Wilshere, Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart is also expected to be excluded from the England squad which is due to be announced this afternoon.

Hart had played second fiddle to Adrian at West Ham United for most of the Premier League campaign and the veteran has not done enough to warrant a spot ahead of young shot-stoppers Jack Butland and Jordan Pickford.
