Ex-England international Chris Waddle has backed the award of the golden ball to Luka Modric after his side lost to France by four goals to two to lose the World Cup final to France on Sunday.

  • Despite dominating the game with Modric in midfield, Croatia fell to a clinical French side in their first ever World Cup final.

Waddle said that the award could easily have gone to a player of the new world champions, but agrees that the Real Madrid player deserves it.

"It would have been very easy for that to go to a French player but that is the right decision. Modric has been a credit to his country," he said, BBC reports.

In other awards, Kylian Mbappe was given the best young player award, while Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois won the golden gloves.

Mbappe also became the second teenager after Pele to score in a World Cup final.

England's Harry Kane won the golden boot after finishing the tournament with six goal, more than any other player.
