Manchester City suffer major injury blow ahead of Liverpool game

Manchester City have suffered a major injury blow ahead of the Liverpool game with midfielder Ilkay Gundogan likely to miss the Premier League clash.

  • Arsenal to swap Gabriel Jesus for Inter Milan star?
  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • The Germany international sustained a suspected hamstring injury during the second half of the 2-1 Champions League win at Hoffenheim and he is now a major doubt to make the Merseyside trip this weekend.

According to The Sun, the Citizens are expected to assess the extent of the injury in the next 24 hours but Pep Guardiola has supposedly conceded that the 27-year-old may not return until after the international break.

With Gundogan injured, David Silva appears the likely candidate to play in a central midfield role alongside Fernandinho this weekend, given Kevin de Bruyne has just returned to training after his knee injury.

Manchester City are presently leading the standings on goal difference to Liverpool but they have a tough task of beating the Reds on Sunday, given they have not tasted a victory at Anfield in any competition since 2005.
