Hammers plot move for Chelsea defender

Hammers plot move for Chelsea defender

13 October 2018 - 13:02

The English centre-back- Gary Cahill is out of contract at Stamford Bridge next summer and currently struggling to get back into the Blues’ first eleven.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Arsenal handed huge boost ahead of Bournemouth clash

  • West Ham are weighing up a potential January move for Chelsea’s Gary Cahill, according to reports. The 32-year-old defender will be out of contract at the club come the end of this season, and he’s not starting for the Blues in the Premier League at present.

It is claimed by the Mirror that Manuel Pellegrini’s side are therefore eyeing Cahill up as a possible mid-season signing from their London rivals. The Chilean manager is understood to have the backing of West Ham’s board in January as the club begin to recover following a poor start to the season.

The Hammers lost their first four league matches, before securing two big wins against Everton and Manchester United either side of a draw with Chelsea.

Despite that recent upturn in results, the side lost their last fixture 1-0 at Brighton and still undoubtedly lack defensive stability, having kept just one clean sheet in their first eight matches of the new Premier League campaign.

OPINION: It might just be the right time for Cahill to seek pastures new. His current situation at Chelsea doesn’t look to get any better. Sarri clearly trusts the pair of Rudiger and David Luiz as first choice centre backs and is looking for another centre back in the market. With Chelsea heavily linked to Rugani of Juventus, it is a clear indication that Cahill doesn’t feature in Sarri’s plans.

A move to the London stadium will be favourable where he could re-establish himself as a solid, robust centre back. Pellegrini signed Balbuena, Issa Diop but the current scenario at West Ham demands a more experienced veteran to lead the defence line.
