Tottenham Hotspur lining up surprise move for Copa America winner

13 July 2019 - 14:12

Times journalist Duncan Castles has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as surprise candidates to land the services of Dani Alves on a free transfer.

  • Arne Slot confirms big Liverpool injury blow
  • Bournemouth close to signing Chelsea defender?

  • The north London giants are considering the futures of Serge Aurier and Kieran Trippier this summer and the departure of either player would coincide with a replacement.

Speaking on The Transfer Window Podcast, Castles has said that Spurs have made contact regarding a potential deal for the 36-year-old despite having the tendency of pursuing young recruits in the transfer market.

"I understand there's been contact with Tottenham Hotspur about the possibility of Dani moving there in what would seem a strange addition for Tottenham given that this is a club focused on younger players," he said.

Alves was initially linked with a move to Manchester City in the summer of 2017 but he opted to decline their advances to join Paris Saint-Germain on a bumper contract agreement.

He has continued to speak about the fond relationship with Citizens boss Pep Guardiola, but it is unclear whether the Premier League holders would be prepared to sign him for a year or two.

Alves is currently on a vacation after celebrating Copa America success with Brazil earlier in the month. The trophy was the country's first in the competition since 2007.
