England international Chris Smalling has poured doubts over his Manchester United future by suggesting that he would like to pen a permanent deal with AS Roma.
The 30-year-old joined the Giallorossi on a season-long loan from United last summer and he has since impressed at the heart of the defence for the Serie A outfit.
Recent reports have indicated that Roma are far apart from agreeing a fee with United for Smalling's permanent transfer but the defender has hinted that he would like to remain at the Stadio Olimpico next season.
"When I first came it was exciting but also daunting because you're not sure what to expect. New country, new experience, but considering the way I've settled in, the love that I have felt, especially from the fans but everyone in Rome, it will be an interesting decision to make," he told.
United are currently loaded with options in the central defensive department with the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe to choose from.
It has previously been claimed that Solskjaer may reintroduce Smalling to the first-team fold next season but the centre-back appears keen on sealing a permanent move to Roma where he is assured with a starting spot.
United have increased Smalling's price tag from £12m to £16m on the back of his impressive displays for Roma but the Italian outfit are reluctant to pay more than £10m for the former Fulham youngster.
