Arsenal defender keen on signing contract extension

27 April 2020 - 18:58

Arsenal defender David Luiz is keen on extending his contract for at least another year, a report from The Athletic claims.

  • Juventus and Napoli enter race for Chelsea winger
  • Felix Nmecha linked with Chelsea move
  • The Brazil international signed for the Gunners from Chelsea last summer and he has since made 32 appearances across all competitions.

His contract was initially expected to expire at the end of the current season but the Gunners decided to trigger the extension clause to prolong his stay for another 12 months.

According to The Athletic, the Brazilian remains a fond figure in the Gunners dressing room and he had played a key role alongside Hector Bellerin in convincing several players to take voluntary paycuts.

The same outlet suggests that he is prepared to remain with the club next term regardless of the competition for places and would be willing to extend his deal until June 2022.

The Gunners are expected to make a number of changes to the squad regardless of the financial impact due to the coronavirus pandemic. The likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi could be sold.
