Liverpool could make an attempt to sign Ben White from Brighton & Hove Albion after the long-term knee injury to Virgil van Dijk.
Van Dijk suffered the setback after a rash challenge from Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby and he is expected to undergo a surgery.
That is likely to keep him out for most of the season and Football Insider reports that they may land a replacement in January.
It is added that they could revive their long-term interest in White after monitoring him closely during his loan stint at Leeds United last term.
White has since integrated into the first-team plans at Brighton and he won't come on the cheap during the January transfer window.
The Seagulls turned out a bid of around £30m from Leeds for the centre-back this summer and they are reportedly holding out for more than £40m.
Liverpool are scheduled to face Ajax in the Champions League in midweek. They are down to just one fit senior centre-back in Joe Gomez.
Joel Matip is apparently struggling with some discomfort in a leg muscle and midfielder Fabinho is likely to fill in as the makeshift centre-back.
