Ferdinand next England captain

Ferdinand next England captain

26 April 2008 - 09:35

Rio Ferdinand is on the brink of own personal glory as he is set to be named both Man Utd and England captain by Fabio Capello. Ferdinand captained England in the friendly defeat to France.

  • Arsenal to swap Gabriel Jesus for Inter Milan star?
  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • John Terry is set to relinquish his duties as captain of England as Rio Ferdinand looks set to take charge full time.

Even more enjoyable for Rio is the fact that he will be captaining Man Utd this weekend against Chelsea.

"With Gary Neville injured and Ryan Giggs unavailable at times, Rio has been our captain," said Fergie.

"Obviously, as Ryan gets older, that is Rio's destiny. We are always looking ahead in that way and Rio is the natural successor.

"His performance in Barcelona on Wednesday was absolutely superb. The experience of Rio in a game like that was vital."
