Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed the reason behind Reece James' absence against Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup.
The Blues exited the competition in the fourth round on Saturday following a disappointing 2-1 defeat at the Amex Stadium.
Following the game, Maresca was asked why Reece James was left out of the matchday squad. He replied: "It was planned.
"He is okay, he is training but is was to protect him."
The England international has had a tough time with hamstring injuries over recent years. He is being handled with extra caution.
James can't play two games in a week, as per Maresca, but his absence proved costly yesterday as the Blues exited the FA Cup.
Malo Gusto was far from convincing from the right-back role and should have done better to prevent Kaoru Mitoma from scoring.
Chelsea will now need to refocus. They are scheduled to face Brighton on the road again in the Premier League on Friday night.
