Liverpool vs PSV: Champions League clash of contrasting forms

"Arne slot's side look to rediscover form in europe as PSV arrive in strong domestic shape"

Liverpool vs PSV: Champions League clash of contrasting forms

24 November 2025 - 14:47

Liverpool’s season has split into two stories: domestic struggles versus European resilience.

  • Cole Palmer returns to Chelsea training after toe injury
  • Barcelona want to sign Chelsea winger Pedro Neto

  • In the Premier League, Arne Slot’s side have stumbled badly, suffering heavy defeats to Manchester City and Nottingham Forest, leaving them mid‑table with six wins and six losses and a negative goal difference. Yet in the Champions League, the Reds have looked far more assured, defeating Atletico Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Real Madrid, with their only setback coming away to Galatasaray. PSV arrive in contrasting form: dominant in the Eredivisie with 11 wins, one draw, and one loss, but less convincing in Europe, where their record stands at one win, two draws, and one defeat. This clash is about which identity holds. Will Slot quieten the murmurs of the sack with a dominant Anfield win, or will PSV exploit Liverpool’s frailties?

    Form Guide

Liverpool began the season with five wins, often relying on late goals rather than control. In Europe, September brought a narrow 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid before a 1–0 defeat in Turkey to Galatasaray. October was disastrous: defeats to Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Brentford left them pointless in the league. A commanding 5–1 win away to Eintracht Frankfurt offered relief, showing their resilience under European lights. November started brightly with a 2–0 win over Aston Villa and a gritty 1–0 triumph against Real Madrid at Anfield, but momentum collapsed with back‑to‑back 3–0 defeats to Manchester City and Nottingham Forest. Liverpool’s domestic form has been terrible, and while they still create chances, defensive frailty means once they concede, they often collapse.

PSV, meanwhile, have enjoyed life domestically under Peter Bosz. Wins over Sparta Rotterdam, Twente, and Groningen set the tone, with only a 2–0 defeat to Telstar spoiling their early run. September brought a 5–3 thriller against Nijmegen, but their Champions League campaign began with a 3–1 home defeat to Union Saint‑Gilloise. A 2–2 draw with Ajax followed, before PSV steadied with a 2–1 win over Excelsior. October saw a 1–1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen, where a VAR decision denied them a first‑half goal. Their standout performance came in Europe with a stunning 6–2 win over Napoli, followed by a 1–1 draw against Olympiacos. November has been perfect: two league wins, six goals scored, and only one conceded.

    Tactical Battle

This match will hinge on midfield control. Slot has emphasised possession, but Liverpool’s slow buildup often leaves them vulnerable to counters. Opponents have sat deep, absorbed pressure, and struck when gaps appear. PSV play a similar ball‑dominant style, focusing on patient buildup from the back, but they commit more numbers forward and look to overload wide areas. Expect a battle of tempo: Liverpool trying to impose intensity, PSV aiming to slow and stretch.

Set pieces could be decisive. Liverpool’s aerial strength remains a weapon, but they have conceded too many goals from dead balls this season. PSV’s Joey Veerman, with five goals and six assists, is a creative midfielder and set‑piece specialist who will look to exploit Liverpool’s defensive lapses.

    Key Players

For Liverpool, Mohamed Salah remains the most dangerous outlet, even in a season where his numbers are down. Cody Gakpo, facing his former club, offers trickery and cutting runs, though his finishing has been criticised. Hugo Ekitike has impressed in limited minutes, with three goals and one assist, and could be a surprise weapon if given the chance. Virgil van Dijk’s leadership will be vital in steadying a shaky back line.

PSV will lean on Ismael Saibari, whose power and technical ability have produced eight goals and two assists this season. Veerman’s creativity will be central, while Luuk de Jong’s aerial presence remains a threat. Goalkeeper Walter Benítez has been in fine form and may need to withstand waves of Liverpool pressure.

    Prediction

If Liverpool score early, Anfield’s atmosphere could carry them to a comfortable win. Champions League nights often bring out their best, and Slot will be desperate to prove his methods can deliver. PSV, however, are dangerous and confident, and Liverpool’s defensive frailties leave the door open. Expect goals, drama, and intensity. My verdict: Liverpool to rise to the occasion with a 3–1 win, though PSV have enough quality to make this a nervy night.
