Manchester United have entered club-to-club talks with West Ham United for midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Portuguese had a wonderful individual season with the Hammers last term, but the east London outfit still failed to avoid Premier League relegation.
They are now expected to part ways with the 21-year-old and reports claim that Man Utd have the upper hand over Arsenal, who are reluctant to meet the reported price.
The Hammers want a hefty £85 million for the Portuguese ace. United have no plans of paying the fee upfront, but believe they can negotiate a lower fixed price with add-ons.
Fernandez has already given his priority to the Red Devils and has no plans of considering a move to Real Madrid despite Jose Mourinho taking over at the Spanish champions.
Mourinho has personally urged Los Blancos to land Fernandes after Bernardo Silva, but the youngster is poised to choose the Red Devils over every other outfit.
