Not many people took much notice when West Brom paid Livingston £200,000 for Greame Dorrans two years ago.
It’s fair to say that after being West Brom’s player of last season, a few Premiership teams took notice of the midfielder. Dorrans finished the season as his club’s top scorer, as West Brom finished second in the league.
West Ham have had at least three bids rejected for the Scottish international. It looks as though Dorrans has now committed himself to the club, by signing an improved contract till 2015.
This may prove to be the best signing that boss Roberto Di Matteo makes this summer. After being the classic example of a yo-yo club for the past few seasons, West Brom will be looking defy odds and finally establish themselves as a top-flight force.
Dorrans didn’t make the cut at his boyhood club Rangers. He was given a chance at Livingston. After an impressive loan spell at Partick Thistle, Dorrans was given a chance in the first team at Livingston.
He repaid that faith with his performances in the 2007/08 season, finishing as the Scottish First Division Player of the Year. This prompted West Brom manager at the time Tony Mowbray, to take a chance on the player.
That deal looked like even more of a steal now. He has scored 20 goals in his 50 plus games for the West Midland side. Not bad for a central midfielder.
Di Matteo will certainly be hoping Dorrans carries on his form into this upcoming Premiership season. If he does then West Brom could be one of this year’s surprise packages.
